Rod Laver is the only man in tennis history to complete the calendar-year Grand Slam twice — first as an amateur in 1962, then again in the Open era in 1969 — on the way to 11 major singles titles overall. He lost several of his best years of Grand Slam eligibility while barred from the majors as a touring professional in the mid-1960s, and is widely regarded as the greatest player to span the amateur and early Open eras; the Australian Open's main stadium, Rod Laver Arena, is named for him.
