Monica Seles won 9 Grand Slam singles titles by age 19, dominating the sport in the early 1990s, before a courtside stabbing attack in 1993 disrupted her career at its peak. Born in Yugoslavia, she became a US citizen in 1994 and returned from the attack to win one more major, the 1996 Australian Open, remaining a top competitor for years afterward before retiring in 2003.
