Arthur Ashe won 3 Grand Slam singles titles — the inaugural US Open in 1968, the 1970 Australian Open, and a landmark 1975 Wimbledon final upset of Jimmy Connors — becoming the first Black man to win any of the three. He retired in 1980 after a heart attack and remained a towering figure in tennis administration and civil-rights activism until his death in 1993.
